Gino's Coffee House Story

Changing the name from Jojo’s Cafe to Gino’s Coffee house was to honour Giovanni (Gino) DeRos.

Gino of Osoyoos, BC passed on October 29, 2023, at the age of 36 following a brave and heroic fight against Brain Cancer and Leptomeningeal Disease.

Gino, who grew up in Oliver was the epitome of kindness. He was Arielle’s husband, Lyndsay’s brother-in-law, and Darrien’s son-in-law. Darrien & Lyndsay moved to Oliver from Langley, BC to help Arielle & Gino while he fought his battle at the Kelowna Hospital in 2022.

Gino was born on September 21st, 1987, in Vancouver, BC. He graduated from the Southern Okanagan Secondary School in 2005 and was known to be an adventurous teenager. After which, he entered the trades as a HVAC Technician for 15 years.

Gino was blessed with the family he always dreamt of. He met his wife Arielle, camping. They were engaged and married 5 years later. They were blessed with 2 wonderful children, Ella (5) and Leo (2) who brought him so much joy and happiness. Gino lived vicariously through his children by taking them boating, teaching them to dirt bike and taking them up to Mt Baldy.

From a young age Gino was a music-lover who listened to music at maximum volume with the bass thumping, fists pumping and couldn’t help but lip-sync to every song. That is why our open mic nights reflect who he is.

Gino loved a roaring fire with family and friends; paired with a good music playlist.

Gino adored animals especially his dogs. And he always made sure they were spoiled with love.

Ever since his childhood, Gino was an enthusiast of life’s many adventures. Whether it was fishing, hiking, playing soccer, dirt biking, or playing hockey, he embraced life with fearlessness and exuberance. But hockey held a special place in his heart, from playing it as a little boy in Oliver to coaching minor hockey as an adult.

He was also a passionate explorer of life who found beauty and thrills in every corner of this world. He enjoyed travelling to Greece, Italy, Spain, Africa, Mexico, California, and Las Vegas.

Gino will forever echo in our hearts through his infectious laugh, his bear-like warm hugs, his unforgettable witty personality and his endearing quick wit. He remains with us, not just as a memory, but as a legacy of love.

The love Gino showered upon his family and friends, specifically his parents, wife Arielle and beloved children Ella and Leo, was the kind of love that transcends a lifetime. He was beyond just being a son, a brother, a brother-in-law, or an uncle; he was a pillar of strength and inspiration for us all.

When Gino passed away, Arielle, Lyndsay and Darrien wanted to build a legacy for Gino. Where everyone still talked about him, where he could still bring joy to people and to honour his name.

Gino’s spirit and personality embody what we envision for our cafe - a welcoming place filled with laughter and connection. Gino’s Coffee House is a reflection of the warmth and joy that Gino brought into our lives.

We cannot wait to welcome you all to Gino’s Coffee House- a place where the spirit of Gino lives on through every cup of coffee and every shared moment.

Through each sunrise and each sunset, may we remember his motto,

“Live as if you’ll die tomorrow and dream as if you’ll live forever.”
